Highway crash cushions can be used for all types of crashes, from minor fender benders to multi-car collisions and pileups. They can be found in a variety of materials, from synthetic leather to specially made polyurethane foam cushions. One of the most popular highway crash cushions on the market today is the roll cage brace.

Highway crash cushions are usually the secondary objects placed on highways to minimize the damage caused by a vehicle or other vehicle component causing an accident. In the past, highway crash cushions were made using steel bars that were placed along the highway to protect people and drivers from head-on impact. Many states used guardrails with the same purpose in mind. In addition to the steel bars, many states used concrete intentions that extended across the width of the guardrail to protect people from absorbing impact and pinching the inside of the guardrail. Both of these kinds of barriers were effective, but they had some obvious limitations.

With increasing globalization, the need for effective means of reducing injuries from traffic collisions has become more important than ever. That's why experts have started looking into the matter of the global market intelligence of cars. By studying the way that drivers in different countries choose to drive, and the strategies used to avoid crashing, engineers have been able to design more highway crash cushions for the road. For instance, in November 2020, the U.K. Highway Care signed a deal to provide Ermes End Terminals from SMA Road Safety in the country to boost crash cushions on the highway networks.

Some of the newest additions to the Highway Safety Regulations include crash barriers. There are currently several different crash barrier systems that have been developed and introduced onto the highways. Some of these crash barriers are simple cones that prevent vehicles from smashing into each other. Other systems are much more complex, containing steel bars or welded sections that act as a barrier against the force of an impact. Regardless of the technology used, crash barriers help to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries that occur in major auto collisions.
