  There are several different types of boat steering systems available on the market today. A hydraulic system essentially works by using a hydraulic motor to propel the boat through the water. In most cases this is done with the use of a chain and pulley system. This type of system can be expensive due to the materials that are necessary to construct it. There are also four main categories of hydraulic steering systems used in boats. A mechanical system utilizes a straight chain driven by a pinion or rack. A hydraulic rack and pinion system utilizes a geared gear to drive the chain, and lastly, there is a rotary gear system that has a large cable guiding the chain. These types of boat steering systems generally do not require the use of oars, so they do not have to be anchored to the boat itself.
