Plant phenotyping is an emerging research field concerned with quantification of plant characteristics and their variations in response to environmental challenges. It is largely motivated by ethical considerations such as adequate food supply must be maintained to meet the increased human need for food, and this can only be achieved effectively through sustainable agriculture, with the use of plant genetics and associated techniques. Currently, plant breeders and their representatives in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries are investing heavily in the development of new plant varieties for the pharmaceutical, bio-producers and other industry sectors. Some of these are currently receiving government financial support.
