Bicycle and Components; Seen A Sharp Increase in Sales Due To the Outbreak COVID-19
In recent times, there has been an increase in the demand
for bicycle and components around the world due to the increasing use of
bicycles as part of fitness activities and a growing number of health conscious
consumers, especially during the COVID-19 (global pandemic). Moreover, the
observed increase in cycling (worldwide) is being encouraged as a safe and
healthy form of outdoor recreation during the pandemic. Both cycling and
walking have increased during the pandemic as people travel and socially
distance, suggesting that these activities are already becoming a more common
element of daily life.
For example, according to the UK Bicycle Association,
bicycle sales increased by 63% year-on-year, between April and June 2020. Cycling
is both a popular way to commute as well as a recreational activity. Moreover,
according to the German Bicycle Industry Association (ZIV), the sales of bicycle
and components in Germany increased by 16.9 percent in 2020 compared to
the year before, amounting to 6.44 billion euros. A bicycle is a pedal-driven,
human-powered vehicle, having both wheels connected to a rigid frame, on which
pedals are operated. Bicycles can be used as a work horse by general delivery
services, messengers, mail carriers, etc.
The main components of a bicycle are wheels, frame, seat,
handle bars, axle, cable-guide, belt-drive, bar ends, bell, brake, dynamo,
bearing, etc. In the past few years, bicycles have evolved with better designs,
comfort, driving experience, and overall appearance. Bicycles are used for
various activities such as city bike, road bike, children bike, mountain bike,
electric bike, and others such as freight bike, ice bike, and more. The bicycle
industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world due to
increasing demand and higher production rates. Globally, there are twice as
many bicycles as automobiles, and they outsell automobiles three to one.
Bicycles can be used for transportation, bicycle commuting,
and utility cycling. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adults
aged 18-64 years should indulge in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity
physical activity throughout the week to stay healthy. Regular cycling improves
heart, lungs, and circulation, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Thus, with the increasing popularity of cycling, the demand for bicycle and
components is also increasing across the globe.
