Ophthalmology Diagnostics and Surgical Devices are Getting Better with Inclusion of Artificial Intelligence
Ophthalmology is the medical field
that specializes in the study of the retina and its functions. It also includes
cornea and glaucoma detection and management. Ophthalmology also includes
diagnostic procedures such as corneal biopsy: topography (hexagram),
fluorescein angiography, laser-assisted iridotomy, refractive surgery, confocal
fluorescence, and ophthalmoscope, to name a few. Ophthalmology can be further
subdivided into specialized areas such as optometry or ophthalmology surgery,
which deals with eye surgeries.
Ophthalmology
diagnostics and surgical devices are devices that can help doctors diagnose diseases and
disorders easily. These instruments, which are commonly referred to as
ophthalmological diagnostics and surgical devices, include Computerized
tomography scanners, computed tomography scanners, laser radiography
instruments, refractive instruments, optical coherence tomography instruments,
and intraocular cameras. An ophthalmologist is a doctor who specializes in the
care of eyes. Refractive and laser ophthalmology are subspecialties in
ophthalmology that focus on the manipulation of the eye's structures. Both
these subspecialties are concerned with the visual correction properties of the
eye. They correct eye defects, increase sharpness and allow for clearer vision.
Both of these subspecialties are concerned with myopia, hypermetropia, and
astigmatism eye diseases.
Cosmetic ophthalmology deals with
surgical procedures that improve the appearance of the eyes. The two that fall
under this category are eyelid surgery and blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty is
the procedure of removing the wrinkles on the eyes. Ophthalmology can be
divided further into two main sub-disciplines namely diagnostic ophthalmology,
which mainly treats patients who are diagnosed with visual problems, and
medical ophthalmology, which mainly treats patients who need surgical
procedures to correct their visual system defects. Diagnostic ophthalmology
mostly deals with age-related diseases and neurological disorders. Medical
ophthalmology generally deals with any type of disease affecting the visual
system. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first
AI-enabled ophthalmology diagnostic device for diabetic retinopathy (DR).
