Fruit Packaging Industry Witnesses Launch of Sustainable Alternatives to Replace Plastic
Fruit
packaging has existed in the market since ancient times. It involves packaging of
fruits and other edible items like nuts, berries and vegetables. Fruits are
packed in special containers in order to protect them from damage while
traveling. Bags, crates, hampers, baskets, cartons, bulk bins, and palletized
containers are convenient containers for handling, transporting, and marketing
fresh produce. The main aim of the packaging is preserving freshness of the
food items. The industry of packaging of different fruit items is huge and several
packaging types have been introduced in the industry.
Fruit packaging industry is largely dependent on various factors
like transportation cost, price, and quality of product. Fruit fresh-cut
produce requires more transportation cost compared to other fruit items.
Generally, fresh-cut produce requires more packing costs. This is due to the
fact that they have a short shelf life. Fruit packing is done so as to promote
healthy and safe eating and extending the shelf life of canned fruits.
Increasing
demand for fruits positively impacts the fruit packaging industry. Most of the
people love to eat fruits on a regular basis. People have become very aware of
their diet and regularly include various fruits in their meals. Such scenario
has led to tremendous growth in the demand for fruit packaging.
Packaging
of fruits has been seen tremendous growth owing to the advent of new products
and new marketing ideas like single-use pack, reusable pack, etc. Low cost of
these products has also made them popular among the consumers. Most of the
manufacturers use good quality of materials to pack the whole range of fruits
and vegetables.
The
fruit packaging industry is witnessing launch of sustainable alternative to
replace plastic clamshells. In August 2021, Greenyard USA/Seald Sweet, a U.S.-based
produce marketing company, developed “EcoBox”, a sustainable alternative to
replace plastic clamshells. It is a moisture resistant, very sturdy
high-graphic box created with clay coated recyclable paperboard, which reduces
the use of plastic by 100 percent.
