Follicular lymphoma treatment has become diverse with the inclusion of surgical procedure, radiation therapy, and medication combination
Follicular Lymphoma, otherwise known
as follicular lymphoma is a type of cancer that occurs when the immune system
attacks the tissues in the body. This type of cancer is generally seen in
younger women and men and is almost unheard of in those who are over the age of
50. It is also not rare in those who have other forms of cancer such as breast
cancer, rectal cancer, melanoma, and other types of skin cancer. Follicular
Lymphoma has the same symptoms and causes as many other forms of cancer,
although it is important to seek treatment if one notices these symptoms. The
annual incidence of follicular lymphoma in the U.K. is 3 to 5 cases per 100,000
with the median age at diagnosis being 60-65 years.
In general, a doctor will perform a
biopsy and examination on the tissue of those who have been diagnosed with this
condition. During the exam, the doctor will look for tumors, masses, or any
other abnormal growths. If cancer is found, then further treatment will be
recommended. One of the most common follicular lymphoma treatments offered is radiation therapy. This type of treatment is used
to treat those who have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Radiation
therapy either employs x-rays or pellets that are made of irradiated material.
The radiation damages the abnormal cells in the body and helps to normalize the
flow of blood in the body.
Follicular lymphoma treatment can
involve radiation therapy or surgical removal of the problem swollen cells. A
combination of medications, medicines, and surgery is used to combat this
condition. As with all cancer treatments, prevention is always better than
cure. You should try to minimize your exposure to things that may trigger the
growth and spread of the disease. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and
relaxation techniques can also help to keep the disease at bay. Recently, in
January 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Yescarta for
Relapsed or Refractory Follicular Lymphoma after two or more lines of systemic
therapy.
