Dimer Acids is witnessing wider applications including in lubricants, fuel oil adhesives, surfactants, and polyamide resins

Dimer Acids

Dimer Acid, also known as dicyclic amino acids, is diatomaceous earth compounds prepared by blending hexane and sulfur in the presence of a catalyst. The density of this compound is approximately four times that of water. Dimer acid is used in the synthesis of polyaramid polymers, low-density fiberboards, low-density insulation, and foam. Dimer acid has a wide range of commercial applications. It is widely used in the paper and thermal coatings industries to manufacture textiles and papers and increase the strength and stiffness of these products and in the manufacturing of lubricants and adhesives. It is also used to manufacture plastic materials, plastics bottles, and other similar products.

Dimer acid is used to improve the resistance of many products to petroleum-based coatings such as oilskin and paint. In the context of cosmetic applications, it is widely used to improve the feel, color, and sheen of cosmetics and hair products, especially natural and organic skincare products and bath and body products. Dimer acid is also used to prevent or reduce the cracking of acrylic products when they have cured to provide a smoother surface. This is due to the fact that acrylics contain low levels of acid. Other applications include the protection of aluminum foil from damage by heat and sun, the resistance of certain plastics to scratching and crushing, protection of paper from moisture, the blocking of oil, grease, and other contaminants, and the lining of vacuum bags and cans.

Dimer-Acid is also widely used in the food and drink industry. As a meat tenderizing substance, it prevents softening of tough meats before they are sent to market. The acidity of this product makes it less abrasive than traditional meat tenderizing salts, thus preserving the texture, flavor, and taste of meats preserved with this compound. Dimer acid is also known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties. These properties have made it a popular ingredient in the cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic and health care products industries. Recently, in March 2021, Phillips Lubricants launched Phillips 66 e-Shield, high performing lubricant solution to optimize electric vehicle performance and protection.
