Blood Ketone Meter; Widely Used to Measure Blood Ketone Levels Present In the Blood

Blood Ketone Meter

Blood ketone meters are sued to measures ketones level in the blood. Ketones are substances that body makes if cells don't get enough glucose (blood sugar). Many ketone blood meters measure the amount of beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHA) in the blood. Along with insulin, beta-hydroxybutyric acid is used to convert ketones into energy. Whereas, excessive production of ketones can cause ketoacidosis, a condition where the blood becomes acidic.

Ketone testing is a part of diabetes management, as it helps prevent a dangerous short-term complication called diabetic ketoacidosis from occurring. Diabetic ketoacidosis is an acute life-threatening complication of a delayed diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. In many countries, such as Mexico, severe diabetic ketoacidosis in type 2 diabetes patients is very common and represents a therapeutic challenge even for an experienced physician. Thus, there is an increasing demand for blood ketone meters in this region.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when the body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. It is caused by a lack of insulin in the body. Thus, it is important for people with diabetes to monitor their ketone levels. According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Japan is one of the 39 countries and territories of the WP region. Around 463 million people have diabetes worldwide, of which, around 163 million people are from the WP Region and this number is expected to reach 212 million by 2045.

Thus, with the increasing prevalence of diabetes, the demand for blood ketone meter is also increasing with a rapid pace around the world, as the most accurate way to test for ketones is to use a meter that measures blood ketone levels. High ketone levels may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, a complication of diabetes that can lead to a coma or even death.
