Blood Transfusion Devices; Used To Add or Replace the Lost Components of the Blood
Blood transfusion devices are used
to add blood into the body after a serious injury or illness. The process of
blood transfusion is done by passing the blood or blood component through blood
transfusion devices. Blood transfusion process is widely used to treat various
medical conditions such as renal disorders, cancer, autoimmune disorders, blood
disorders, and others. Trauma and accident injuries, C-section procedures, and
cardiovascular procedures are some of the most commonly performed surgeries
that require blood transfusion devices.
Blood
transfusion devices used to administer blood or blood components
including volumetric infusion and external pressure or rapid infusion devices,
blood warmers and syringe drivers must be operated according to the
manufacturer's instructions, as well as can be designated safe and appropriate
for blood transfusion. Four types of blood or blood components can be given
through blood transfusions, such as plasma, platelets, red blood cells, and
whole blood. Most of the blood comes from whole blood donations given by
volunteer blood donors.
Transfusion of own blood
(autologous) is the safest method but requires planning and not all patients
are eligible. It is usually only an option for elective surgery. Blood
transfusion typically takes one to four hours, depending on the reason for the
procedure. The benefits of a transfusion may last for up to 2 weeks but vary
depending on circumstances. Transfusions are generally considered safe, but
there is some risk of complications. Mild complications and rarely severe ones
can occur during the transfusion or several days or more after.
Blood transfusion devices play an
important life-saving function in the treatment of malignant neoplasms
(cancer), hematological diseases, and other disorders. Therefore, with the
increasing prevalence of aforementioned diseases or disorders, the demand for
blood transfusion is also increasing with a rapid pace. In Germany, blood
services are provided by four organizations; German Red Cross Blood
Transfusion, the Commercial Blood Centers, State and Communal Blood Transfusion
Services, and Plasmapheresis Centers of the Plasmafractionation Industry.
