Biodegradable tableware is becoming increasingly popular with rising emphasis on reducing carbon footprint and cutting the use of plastics

Biodegradable Tableware

Biodegradable or compostable tableware is made from organic substances such as sugar, starch, cornstarch, rice, bamboo, and recycled newspaper. This tableware is considered to be an ecologically friendly alternative to other disposable tableware items. Unlike plastic, these materials don't contribute to the accumulation of plastic waste, thus being considered a safer material to use. Segmented biodegradable tableware is used for commercial and residential uses. On the other hand, if the raw material doesn't undergo any processing, the food substances will simply sink to the bottom of the pool and eventually decompose on their own.

There are two reasons why biodegradable tableware has gained significant popularity. First, it helps in reducing carbon footprint and second, as this type of tableware has a longer shelf life, less packaging, and a much lower price, it is a great way to promote responsible consumption. Furthermore, since biodegradable tableware can be used both for commercial use and for home consumption, it is an economic, environmental, and health advantage. Recently, in February 2021, Scientists from CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) developed a technology for manufacturing 100% biodegradable tableware, including cups and dishes from wheat bran.

There are many biodegradable products available in the market such as sugarcane, vegetable oil, wood, aluminum, bamboo, and rice. For instance, wood chips, crushed walnut shells, and sugarcane residues make excellent compost for plant life. Similarly, vegetable oil, ceramic chips, bamboo, and rice residue make good materials for making biodegradable paper products and other household waste items. There are many reasons why using biodegradable tableware is a must for the holistic health of humans and our planet as a whole. As already mentioned, such products are not harmful to the environment in any way. Furthermore, biodegradable cutlery, dishware, cups, plates, tablecloths, etc. can be used repeatedly as they are completely recyclable. With such utensils, we can be assured of eating healthier as they help in preventing food-borne diseases and illnesses.
