Adoption of Infection Control Practices and Procedures at Healthcare Settings Increases Significantly Post Covid-19 Pandemic
There
are several methods of infection control and prevention, including personal
hygiene practices, general practices of health care and institutional practices
relating to safe handling of hazardous substances. The use of personal
protective equipment is a necessary practice in the control and prevention of
communicable diseases; it is done to protect the wearer and to reduce the risk
of transmitting infections to other people. Personal care practices include
washing hands frequently and following hygiene practices such as not using
towels or rags that have been used on a patient in the last three months.
General practices relating to health care involve maintaining adequate supplies
of medical supplies such as medications and devices.
Adoption
of infection
control practices and procedures at healthcare settings has increased
significantly post COVID -19 pandemic. In Germany, from 3 January 2020 to
5:54pm CEST, 27 July 2021, there have been 3,758,401 confirmed cases of
COVID-19 with 91,565 deaths, reported to WHO. As of 17 July 2021, a total of
88,400,469 vaccine doses have been administered.
It
is important to apply standard precautions routinely in all health-care
settings for all patients. These precautions include: hand hygiene; use of
personal protective equipment, prevention of needle-stick or sharps injury;
safe waste management; cleaning and disinfection of equipment; and cleaning of
the environment. PPE help to reduce the
spread of the pathogens. The effectiveness of PPE depends on adequate and
regular supplies, adequate staff training, proper hand hygiene and in
particular, appropriate human behavior.
With
the emergence of Covid-19 and increasing demand for infection control, various
companies are focused on acquiring companies that offer infection-prevention
solutions. In July 2021, XPhyto Therapeutics, a provider of analytical testing
and extract manufacturing services, acquired 3a Diagnostics in a bid to advance
its infection-prevention solutions.
