Explosive Detection Technologies; Widely Used to Detect or Identify Explosive Materials

Explosive Detection Technologies

Explosive detection technologies are used for destructive identification of explosive materials at airports, ports, railway stations, and border control. Various types of explosive detection technologies are used to detect explosive, such as Electromagnetic, Infrared, X-ray, and Others. Colorimetric test kits are used for destructive identification of explosive materials, as it is one of the simplest, established, and most widely used methods for the detection of explosives. The various techniques used by explosive detection experts are based on the specific threat that the device poses to public safety and security.

Explosive detection equipment are of two types, such as bulk detection and trace detection. Ion mobility spectrometry is commonly used to detect signatures of explosive materials, especially at the United States airports. Moreover, gas chromatography (GC) is used to detect, in order to separate molecules before detection. Explosive detection technology finds its applications in military and defense and critical infrastructure. Many types of explosive detection technologies are used for the detection or identification of explosive materials. Such technologies have become an integral part of the border patrol security and airport security.

Explosive detection is a non-destructive inspection process used for identification of explosive materials. Bulk detection systems rely on neutron imaging or X-ray to locate large quantities of explosive materials. Bulk detection equipment includes any device or system that remotely senses both chemical and physical properties of an object to detect the presence of explosive material. Whereas trace detection involves chemical detection of explosives by collecting and analyzing small amounts of explosive and looking for residue or contamination from handling or being near explosive material.

Trace explosive-detectors are able to detect explosives of small magnitude. Devices similar to explosives trace detectors are also used to detect narcotics. The main advantage of explosive detection equipment is a quick and operational easy search of objects, persons, and buildings by hand- held detectors.
