Efforts Must Be Taken To Standardize Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging Systems with Rapid Increase in Demand for Electric Vehicles Worldwide
Standardization
is vital to widespread deployment of wireless electric vehicle charging, both
in the U.S. and worldwide, enabling any remotely equipped electric vehicle to utilize
any standard electric charger. With global demand for electric vehicles
increasing at a rapid pace, companies developing new EV technologies are
working hard to meet customer demand. While some companies have had successful
first-moves in markets such as the U.S., they still face a number of obstacles
to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles worldwide. One such obstacle is
lack of standards. Lack of standards allows companies to develop proprietary wireless
electric vehicle charging systems that are different from those that are
already in the market. This practice leads to a delay in the widespread
adoption of wireless charging technology, and deters potential buyers of
electric vehicles from making a purchase.
Efforts
must be taken to standardize wireless
electric vehicle charging systems. Electric vehicle associations must
aim to make electric vehicles more marketable and reduce the cost of ownership.
While the standards are yet to be formally approved in various countries, authorities
are providing encouragement to international automotive manufacturers to
introduce similar plans for their vehicles.
The
standard for a wireless electric vehicle charging is expected to include support
for Qi-based wireless electric vehicle charging. The Qi-based technology
provides a convenient and space-saving way of charging portable devices using
electricity. Qi-based charging systems are capable of charging various
electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, handheld
computers and even digital cameras. The main advantage of using Qi-based
technology is that it is space-efficient and does not emit toxic emissions.
Using wireless charging, one can continue to drive a vehicle to running out of
power from the gas station.
A
recent survey shows that a vast majority of car owners in the U.S to own at
least one electric vehicle (EV). Many car owners think they can only charge
their vehicles at stations run by major car manufacturers. Although this may be
true up to some extent, most major car manufacturers are now offering a wide
selection of wireless electric vehicle charging stations compatible with most
portable charging products on the market today.
