Structural Health Monitoring; Monitor, Inspect, and Detect Damage to Structures with Minimum Labor Involvement

Structural Health Monitoring

Structural health monitoring provides a useful tool to ensure integrity and safety, to detect the development of damage, and to assess the performance deterioration of civil infrastructure. It involves the use of monitoring systems to provide information on the health and structural integrity of a building or other structure over time. This information can be used to identify deficiencies in serviceability, design, load bearing efficacy, and environmental compliance. Health monitoring is an essential component of building maintenance. It is vital to identify any deterioration which may pose a serious health or safety risk.

Structural health monitoring can be provided for a wide range of structures ranging from private homes to commercial establishments. It involves many tasks, such as obtaining information for site condition analysis, inspection of materials, and assessing the condition of mechanical and civil engineering aspects, such as reinforcement. The objective of the material testing is to establish the validity of the site condition and to determine whether or not the material used meets the necessary and projected needs. Quality monitoring is also required. In these cases, a sample is drawn from a controlled source and analyzed to identify problems that might arise.

This sample is then analyzed to evaluate the ability of the material to perform its intended purpose, with acceptable efficiency and performance. The structural health monitoring process involves monitoring of the system over time with the help of periodically sampled response measurements from an array of sensors. Different procedures are involved in structural health monitoring, such as statistical model development, data compression, feature extraction, data acquisition, normalization, operational evaluation, etc. It is used to analyze and monitor the health of various structure such as stadiums, dams, bridges, buildings, and large machineries.

Thus, there is an increasing demand for structural health monitoring around the world. For instance, in April 2021, QuakeLogic and SignaGuard announced the launch of a breakthrough process that combines the proprietary technology of both companies for the structural health monitoring in earthquake-prone regions.
