Poliomyelitis Therapeutics; No Cure, Polio Vaccination Is the Most Safe & Effective Way

Poliomyelitis Therapeutics

Poliomyelitis therapeutics include bed rest, pain relievers, and portable ventilators. However, the treatment of the poliomyelitis (polio) depends on the severity of the infection. Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. This can occur over a few hours to a few days. It can be transmitted through contaminated food/water or contact with an infected person, and can be prevented through immunization. Poliomyelitis therapeutics, such as vaccine, almost always protects a child for life, if given multiple times.

Poliomyelitis mainly affects children under 5 years of age. Initial symptoms include vomiting, headache, fatigue, fever, pain in the limbs, and stiffness in the neck. Most people infected with poliomyelitis have no symptoms or very mild symptoms. There is no cure, only treatment to alleviate the symptoms. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the European Region polio-free since 2002. Europe is polio free from more than 20 years. In Germany, the last case of poliomyelitis was diagnosed in 1990. Since then only 0 to 3 cases of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis were found per year.

Polio is currently eradicated in almost every country of the western world except for Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Polio vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from becoming infected with poliomyelitis. It is important to note that 95% of people who receive two doses of polio vaccine remain free of paralytic polio virus. Moreover, polio does not always cause severe forms of paralytic disease, but it is possible to contract the infection and suffer from mild to moderate paralytic symptoms for several weeks after contracting the virus.

In countries where the disease is highly prevalent, and especially in children, the risk of death due to complications from poliomyelitis is very high. The development of the safe and effective vaccines to prevent polio was one of the major breakthroughs of the 20th century.
