PEDOT Provides Versatile Tools for Modulating Brain Activity in Treatment of Neurological Disorders
Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)
or PEDOT is an organic non-toxic liquid polymer having high solubility. The
most common derivative of PEDOT is PEDOT-2 and it was synthesized by coupling
the aromatic ligand triterpenoid (Cannerellaellaceae, Tricophytaceae) with
methyl hydroxide at a temperature of 300 degree Fahrenheit. It is colorless,
transparent and odorless; however, recent clinical research has revealed that
some color changes are also found in some PEDOT derivatives, specifically
PEDOT-2. This organic non-toxic liquid is used as a substitute for benzene and
ethylene in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, in food and drink preparation
and as a stabilizer for various plastics.
PEDOT,
as a high charge injection material for low-frequency stimulation, has emerged
as a bioelectronics and medical, therapeutic breakthrough. It has been found to
possess a wide range of promising health effects, including the treatment of
Parkinson's disease, circulatory system disorders, oral care and bone growth.
Medical experts in developing economies of the U.S., the U.K, and other
countries are now optimistic about the ability of PEDOT
to reverse and possibly prevent some forms of cancer and neuromuscular
diseases. Since PEDOT has low toxicity, it is considered as one of the most
promising substances for use in treating neurological disorders such as
Parkinson's.
Another
promising PEDOT derivative is PEDOT-2. PEDOT-2 is considered as a more stable,
less toxic substance than PEDOT, which has a number of drawbacks. First, the
price of PEDOT-2 is approximately three times higher than PEDOT. Second, the
processing method for PEDOT-2 involves heat compression rather than cold
compression. Third, despite its low toxicity, PEDOT-2 is not considered as a
bioelectronics or medical therapeutic breakthrough due to the lack of good
studies and investigations on its prolonged use. Because of its unique chemical
and physical property, PEDOT-2 is formulated in two different forms, i.e., in
liquid and in aqueous solutions. Liquid PEDOT is the more convenient
formulation because it can be used on a larger area without affecting the
permeability of the solvents. This enables more areas to be treated in a
shorter period of time. However, PEDOT-2 should not be mixed with other
solvents or liquids before or after application. Mixing may disrupt the overall
chemical and physical property of the emerging field known as bioelectricity.
