Australia and New Zealand Sterile Surgical Gloves; Prevent the Possible Transmission of Diseases between Caregivers and Patients
Australia and New Zealand sterile surgical gloves are worn
by surgeons or health professionals during surgical procedures. They help avoid
infection, contamination, and entry of bacteria and microorganisms during
surgical procedures, especially during orthopedic surgery. Surgical gloves are
made to a higher standard and have more precise sizing, with better sensitivity
and precision. There are two types of medical gloves, such as surgical and
examination. Surgical gloves are generally sterile, whereas examination gloves
are either sterile or non-sterile.
Australia
and New Zealand sterile surgical gloves are made from natural and
synthetic sources. The natural source for making surgical gloves is latex and
synthetic source for making surgical gloves are neoprene, polyisoprene, and
others. Surgical gloves are extensively used as personal protective equipment
to protect the patient and/or wearer from spreading disease or infection during
medical examination procedures. Sterile gloves help prevent surgical site infections
and reduce the risk of exposure to blood and body fluid pathogens for the
health care worker.
Surgical gloves, if used over an extended period of time it
is possible that some bacteria, fungi, or viruses may become immune to most
forms of sterilization. For high-quality surgical gloves, latex is considered
the ultimate product. Latex rubber provides the strength and durability
required to provide 100% latex protection against any chemical, biological, or
physical agent. Therefore, with so many different uses, latex rubber remains
the material of choice for latex gloves everywhere. Both latex and vinyl gloves
can be used for low-risk, general procedures such as a non-invasive physical
exam.
William Stewart Halsted is widely credited as the first to develop
and introduce rubber surgical gloves for use in the United States in 1894 to
protect the hands from the harsh antiseptics in widespread use as
disinfectants. In healthcare facilities, sterile gloves are used to protect the
wearer from contamination with excretions, secretions, and blood, and the
associated risk of contamination with pathogens capable of reproduction. The
primary purpose of surgical gloves is to act as a barrier to prevent the
possible transmission of diseases.
