Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitors; Measure Blood Pressure (BP) at Regular Intervals
Diagnosing and treating hypertension is serious business,
and as research shows, ambulatory blood pressure monitors (ABPM) are far
superior to other testing available to clinicians. ABPM allows blood pressure
readings to be recorded over a 24-hour period. It measures blood pressure in
regular intervals during daily activities. It is said to be effective enough to
reduce the typical white coat hypertension effect where a patient's blood
glucose level is elevated greatly during the test process because of stress and
anxiety induced by being in a medical setting. However, it is also said to be
of great importance in many other ways.
According to the British Hypertension Society (BHS), the
European Society of Hypertension (ESH), and the Association for the Advancement
of Medical Instruments (AAMI) guidelines, the accuracy of the ambulatory
blood pressure monitors is tested in a wide range of patients including
young, elderly, pregnant, and obese subjects who provide the correct size cuff.
It is safe is not associated with complications. Ambulatory blood pressure monitors
are worn on the upper arm with the help of a belt. These monitors use an
oscillometric technique to detect mean, diastolic, and systolic blood pressure
along with heart rate.
Moreover, ambulatory blood pressure monitors generate report
of average diastolic and systolic blood pressure and heart rate. Thus, with the
increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension, the demand
for ambulatory blood pressure monitors is also increasing. In Japan, around 43
million people are hypertensive, of which only 50% are treated, and about 25%
are controlled at the target blood pressure level. Moreover, in April 2019, the
Japanese Society of Hypertension published new guidelines for the management of
hypertension. ABPM help evaluate the efficacy and cardiac safety of both
hypertensive and anti-hypertensive drugs as well as endpoints for
cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes.
