Silicone
elastomers are extensively used in many fields including packaging,
pharmaceutical industries, medical devices, food and beverage industry, textile
industry, and aerospace industry, etc. They are extensively used in the food
processing industry. They are also used in the automobile manufacturing
industry for making automobile tires, brake pads, heat shields, and many more.
These
are highly demanded commodity products owing to the features that they provide.
Silicone
elastomers are known for their resistance to extreme temperatures, chemical
reactions, abrasion, friction, abrasion resistance, creep resistance, and
compressive strength. It is also known to have high tensile strength, tensile
flexibility, dimensional stability, and thermal conductivity property. They
have excellent adhesive properties, chemical and physical properties, good heat
conductivity, good electrical and mechanical properties, excellent resistance
to corrosion, flame retardant properties, excellent resistance to ozone, and
also do not create any harmful toxic gases
Since
silicone elastomers are very popular all around the world and therefore they
are manufactured in large quantities. However, they are manufactured through a
number of processes such as injection molding, cold-rolling, laser cutting,
thermoforming, shrink-wrapping, and other means. These processes are adopted in
order to produce different types of elastomers. Chlorosilanes, polyisocyanates,
polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyimide are some of the popular
elastomers. They are used in numerous
fields. However, there are certain limitations of the material and this holds
true for some of the industrial uses as well. For instance, unlike other
materials such as rubber and plastic, which can go through several cycles of
curing, these elastomers cannot go through such a process. This is because
there are some major factors that may lead to their break down and thus they
need to be handled with extra care during their use. The major reasons that cause the breakdown of
silicone elastomers include heat, chemicals, moisture, abrasion, static
electricity, oxidation, and ozone.
