Increasing Adoption of Healthcare It Solutions and Launch of New Products to Boost Demand For Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)
Picture archiving and
communication system (PACS) is a medical imaging technology known for its economical
storage and convenient access capabilities. In simple terms, PACS is a picture
archiving and communications system that relies on four major components: image
acquisition devices (imaging modalities), communication networks, archive and
server, and integrated display workstations.
Increasing adoption of
diagnostic imaging for the treatment and management of various chronic diseases
such as cancer and diabetes, has led to high demand for picture archiving and
communication system (PACS). According to the World Health Organization’s
Globocan 2020, Germany recorded 628,519 cases of cancer 252,065 cancer-related
deaths in 2020. PACS can be integrated
into a radiotherapy department as a long-term archive of patient treatments. However,
in the recent times, although radiotherapy systems now use Digital Imaging and
Communications in Medicine (DICOM) for both storage and communication, the
adoption of PACS in radiotherapy is very limited.
Integration of picture
archiving and communication system (PACS) with radiology information system
is expected to offer various benefits to radiologists. Such integration offers
secure storage, retrieval, and transfer of images, which in turn helps a
hospital radiology department to function more effectively. Such integration
also favors diagnostic centers, small hospitals, and clinics as PACS can also
be designed while considering the requirements of small hospitals.
The demand for picture
archiving and communication system (PACS) is expected to increase in emerging
economies as various governments focus on encouraging adoption of healthcare IT
solutions such as electronic health record and radiology information system.
Moreover, launch of new products is also expected to boost demand for PACS. For
instance, in April 2020, Konica Minolta Healthcare Americas, Inc., a provider
of medical diagnostic, primary imaging solutions focused on digital
radiography, ultrasound and healthcare IT, lunched Rede PACS and Rede Mini PACS
for ultrasound and X-ray image management in the U.S.
